Shopmobility

What is Shopmobility?

Shopmobility is a scheme that hires scooters and wheelchairs to enable those with a limited mobility to use the facilities in central Hartlepool. It is for anyone, whatever age, with limited mobility, short or long term.

Shopmobility is a Registered Charity and a project of Hartlepool Access Group which is supported by Hartlepool Borough Council and Middleton Grange Shopping Centre as well as local businesses, industry, trusts and other charities. Their generosity is much appreciated, as are our volunteers, without whom the scheme could not operate.

Shopmobility is now well established in hundreds of towns and cities across the country. If you are need the same assistance as you require in Hartlepool, then information is available from our centre.

What equipment is available?

We have walking sticks, crutches, three and four wheeled scooters, manual wheelchairs and electric wheelchairs.

Booking Equipment

Booking is advisable to avoid disappointment. You can book by calling into Shopmobility or by telephoning us on 01429 861777. Please do not leave bookings on the answerphone.

Assistance

Trained volunteers are available to accompany you should you require this service. Advanced booking is required.

How do I join?

Simply call in to Shopmobility ans complete a registration form to join our membership scheme. You will be asked for one form of identification, e.g. benefit book, driving licence, utility bill and two passport size photographs.

Membership

You will be issued with a membership card. For an hourly fee of £1.00. All equipment.

Training

When you have registered, we will advise you which is the most suitable vehicle for your nedds. We will provide training until we are happy that you are in control and you are confident using the equipment.

Hire of Manual Chairs

Shopmobility now have manual wheelchairs for overnight and holiday hire at a cost of &pound5.00 per day, &pound20.00 per week and &pound30.00 per fortnight.

Friends of Shopmobility

A group of volunteers support Shopmobility by fund raising and holding events. If you would like to support them in any way, please telephone or call in.

Volunteers are always needed to help run the scheme. If you think you could help, then please call at Shopmobility or telephone for an application form.

"Having used the facilities of Shopmobility for about ten months, I feel that I am well able to comment on its absolute vital part of our life. My mother-in-law is severely disabled and unable to walk. I have a severe back problem and am unable to push her own wheelchair, so unless my husband is with me, I could not take his mother out at all. "Shopmobility has changed my life. Before it opened, I had not been around the shopping centre for a number of years. This was because of my walking difficulties. To go shopping or a social occasion I had to find out how near I could park the car or how many steps or stairs needed to be climbed before committing myself to the journey. This meant I went out less and less as my condition deteriorated. I no longer have to rely on mail order to purchase goods and now with your help I can shop in the Middleton Grange Shopping Centre.
